While living abroad in Vienna, Austria, for eight months, Kim studied renaissance and baroque flute with Friederike Stradner. Her passion and enthusiasm for Baroque era music and instruments from this experience led her to apply for Brigham Young University’s Graduate Research Fellowship, which she was later awarded. Her fellowship research included studying and transcribing of the original manuscripts of Christoph Graupner’s flute concerti (located in Darmstadt, Germany). She was also selected to perform in recital at Schloß Heiligenkreuz as a participant of the Vienna International Masterclasses, while studying with Barbara Giesler-Haase in Vienna.
Kim has performed as a soloist in Salt Lake City’s Assembly Hall on Temple Square, toured with Brigham Young University’s Chamber Orchestra to the British Isles, and soloed Malcolm Arnold’s Concerto no. 2 with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Her ensemble experience is varied, having performed with all of Brigham Young University’s top orchestras, wind symphony, honors woodwind quintet, and flute/harp duo.
While she loves performing both as a soloist and in ensembles, she is most passionate about sharing her love of music with others, and in doing so helping them to achieve their goals as a musician. She has been teaching privately since 2002 and currently maintains a private flute studio in Hillsboro, Oregon. Former teaching positions include flute instructor at The Music School (American Fork, Utah) and private flute teaching assistant at Brigham Young University.
